Season 2019 Match Reports

Match Report and Result.

Match Reports

May 2nd at Basingstoke Town.

This was always going to be a difficult start to the season against the 2018 League Winners and Play-off finalists. Both the teams who finished above us in the League last season reached the final, which was won by Fleet United Cygnets. I think this goes to show the standard of the Central Division compared with the other groups.

The afternoon was dry and sunny with the threat of showers and the green was in fair condition for an early season match.

Our very limited numbers of Lady players meant we could only field two, so one rink where always going to face an already difficult task with a five shot penalty. Get well soon Dot we need you back.

Rink 1: John Mitchell, John Mutlow and John Welch.

AWRE started the game with the 5 shot penalty and it was a burden they were never able to overcome. AWRE only won six ends, five of which were only by a single shot. At the break the score was 5 -18. The second period continued to  be dominated by the Town and the final score was 9 - 29. Although the margin of 20 shots enabled AWRE to take the match point with the results on the other rinks.

Rink 2: David Bowman, Ian Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

This was a very close game where neither team were able to go into a commanding lead, and at the break AWRE leading 7 - 5. AWRE started the second period strongly scoring seven shots in the first three ends and won six of the eight ends played. AWRE finished the game by winning 19 - 7, A very good all round  performance from this triple.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE started this match very strongly and won seven of the first ten ends, meaning at the break they were leading 12 - 6. Two threes on ends eleven and twelve opened up twelve shot lead and meant at the end of the game the final score was 23 - 13, another very good performance by this triple.

Match Result: AWRE 51 (5 Points) Basingstoke Town 49 (2 Points) which was better than last season when we took 3 points from the match.

May 9th Home to Thornycroft.

The afternoon was overcast and heavy rain an hour or so before the scheduled time made conditions unpleasant. It was agreed that we would try to play the ten ends required to constitute a match.  Hardly surprising the green was very heavy and a lot of short woods were a common site on all rinks.

Again our limited numbers of Lady players meant one rink were again going to face a five shot penalty, however Thornycroft had the same problem, and the draw paired both these triples together, meaning both sides started level.

Rink 1: Tom Dearman, John Mutlow and John Welch.

AWRE lost the first two ends to single shots but then won seven of the remaining ends to win 21 - 9.

Rink 2: David Bowman, Ian Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

After the first five ends a very close game was taking place with both teams level at three all. AWRE then won the next five ends to win the match 14 - 3.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE started this match very strongly and won the first eight ends, to go into a twenty shot lead. The last two ends were won by Thornycroft meaning the final score was 20 -.3.

Match Result: AWRE 55 (7 Points) Thornycroft 15 (0 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season we took only 3 points from the match.

May 16th Home to Marnell Jades.

A sunny bright afternoon with a cold wind but a great improvement on the conditions of last week.

This week we had Dot back after illness and John Maycock fit again after injury. Also Diana was playing her first match in the league.

Prior to this match AWRE were top of the league with  twelve points from two fixtures.

Rink 1: Diana Garrard, John Maycock and John Welch.

AWRE lost the first five ends and were eleven shots down, before picking up seven shots on ends seven and eight. At the break the score was eight shots to thirteen. During the game AWRE only won six ends, including two counts of five. The final score was 17 - 24.

Rink 2: Dot Brown, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

A very even match throughout with AWRE winning ten of the eighteen ends. After the second end AWRE were always leading until dropping a four on end fourteen to level things at fifteen all. A strong finish and by winning the last four ends resulted in victory by 22 - 15.

Rink 3: John Mitchell, Ian Lightbody and Elaine Bowman.

AWRE started this match with a five shot advantage due to all male opposition triple, and held the advantage throughout the match. At the break the score was seventeen shots to eight, with the match ending with the the final score was 21 -.15.

Match Result: AWRE 60 (5 Points) Marnell Jades 54 (0 Points).  The same points total as in the corresponding fixture last season.

May 23rd Away to Howard Park Whites.

I was not playing in this match so the report is taken from details from the scorecards, conditions were dry and bright.

Apart from myself and Dot I had a full squad to select from, however Tom went ill on the day of the match and John Welch took his place.

Prior to this match AWRE were top of the league with seventeen points from their three fixtures, three points clear of Basingstoke Town in second place, with today's opponents a further point behind in third place.

Rink 1: Diana Garrard, John Mutlow and John Maycock.

AWRE started this match strongly by scoring a six on the first end and on the tenth end scored an eight to lead by eighteen shots to seven at the break. The remaining ends were evenly matched and the final score was 24 - 13.

Rink 2: John Welch, David Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

This was certainly a game that changed after the break.  AWRE only scored three singles prior to tea at which point they were losing three shots to ten. In the remaining ends AWRE scored fourteen against two by Howard Park  . which resulted in victory by 17 - 12.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE started this game by dropping a seven on end two and only won five ends during the entire match. At the break the score was five shots to fifteen, with the match ending with a win for Howard Park by 8 -.22.

Match Result: AWRE 49 (5 Points) Marnell Jades 47 (2 Points).  The same points total as in the corresponding fixture last season.

May 30th Away to Oakley B.

Conditions were dry and bright with a steady breeze and the green was in excellent condition.

This week proved difficult as I had several players unavailable, but it was good to have four ladies playing and Graham Johnston joined the squad and played his first match.

Prior to this match AWRE were top of the league with twenty two points from their four fixtures, just one point clear of Basingstoke Town in second place.

Rink 1: Diana Garrard, Ian Bowman and Graham Johnston.

AWRE never really got going in this match and were six down after only three ends. Going into the break things had improved with Oakley leading eleven shots to eight. Six shots conceded on the first two ends after tea meant a nine shot difference which proved too much and the final score was 14 - 21, however both teams won nine ends each.

Rink 2: Dot Brown, David Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

A very strong showing from this triple and two fives on ends six and seven meant a lead of six shots at tea. By winning twelve of the eighteen ends AWRE were always in control and won by 24 - 15.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, John Welch and Graham Tompkins.

This match was very similar to the match on rink one but AWRE did not score their first points to end six. At tea they were behind by six shots to twelve. AWRE had the better of the remaining ends but were never able to recover from the poor start and lost 12 - 16.

Match Result: AWRE 50 (2 Points) Oakley B 52 (5 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season we took maximum points.

June 6th Home to Fleet United Swans.

Conditions were dry and bright when the match started but only thirty minutes before there had been a very heavy shower. The green was in fair condition although looking very dry in patches.

Prior to this match AWRE were 2nd in the league table with twenty four points from their five fixtures, two points behind Basingstoke Town.

Rink 1: Diane Tompkins, Graham Johnston and Graham Tompkins.

This triple started with a five shot advantage due to the opposition being all male, and a five on the first end opened a ten shot lead. Fleet never recovered from this, although by winning the four ends prior to the break reduced the gap to six shots. The final eight ends were evenly matched but the game finished with AWRE winning 23 - 16.

.Rink 2: Dot Brown, John Mutlow and John Maycock.

Fleet Swans made the best start in this match and after seven ends were leading by ten shots to two, a seven on end nine by AWRE, meant at tea the scores were level at eleven all. After thirteen ends Fleet held a three shot advantage, but AWRE then won the final five ends, scoring ten shots, to win the match 22 - 15.

Rink 3: John Mitchell, David Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

A very close match throughout with neither team able to dominate. At tea AWRE lead by three shots  After sixteen ends Fleet held a two shot advantage, but excellent play by Elaine to move the jack meant a four to AWRE from a position of Fleet holding the shot wood. The final score was 18 - 15 to AWRE

Match Result: AWRE 63 (7 Points)  Fleet United Swans 46 (0 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season AWRE only took two points , but the match was against the Cygnets not the Swans.

June 13th Away to Hook Diamonds.

Due to a very wet week and morning rain, together with the afternoons forecast, it was agreed that this match would be postponed and re-arranged for later in the season.

In the latest table AWRE were top of the league table with thirty one points from their six fixtures, four points ahead of Howard Park Whites. Basingstoke Town did not play last week and were third on twenty six points from five matches.

June 20th Home to Basingstoke Town.

Basingstoke were unable to raise a team for this fixture due to County commitments, the match is now due to take place on August 8th

There were no matches played in the Central Division last week due to the weather conditions so the league table remained unchanged.

June 27th Away to Thornycroft.

The sunny and warm afternoon and the green was in excellent condition. Several of the team who had played the venue before said they had never seen the green look and play so well

Again our limited numbers of Lady players meant one rink were again going to face a five shot penalty, however Thornycroft had the same problem, and the draw paired both these triples together, meaning both sides started level.

Rink 1: John Mitchell John Mutlow and John Maycock.

After six ends the match was very even but a seven on end seven opened a six shot lead for AWRE. At the tea break AWRE were leading by two shots, eleven  to nine. After fourteen ends AWRE were holding a single shot lead but dropped seven shots without reply on the final four ends to lose by six shots, 14 - 20.

Rink 2: David Bowman, Ian Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

A game full of high scoring ends with eight ends won by three shots or more. At tea Thornycroft were leading by four shots, nine to thirteen. Five on end fourteen opened a four shot lead to AWRE which increased to seven with only two ends to play, but threes on the final two ends by Thornycroft meant the match finished with  AWRE winning 21 - 20

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, John Cavanagh and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE started strongly and two fives in the opening five ends opened a fourteen shot lead. At the break AWRE were leading fifteen shots to five. AWRE were always in control and a six on end fourteen opened a sixteen shot lead. Despite losing the final four ends AWRE ended with a comfortable win by 24 - 14.

Match Result: AWRE 59 (5 Points) Thornycroft 54 (2 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season we took only 3 points from the match.

July 4th Away to Marnell Jades.

A very hot afternoon with bright sunshine and the green was in excellent condition.

This week for a change I had almost a full squad available to choose from, prior to the match AWRE were still second in the league with thirty six points from the first seven matches played. Howard  Park were top with thirty seven points but had played an extra match.

Rink 1: Dot Brown, Graham Johnston and John Maycock.

After losing the first two ends AWRE started to score well and at the break were leading thirteen shots to six. Both teams won four of the remaining eight ends, each scoring eight points in the process. AWRE finished taking the rink points with a 21 - 14 victory.

Rink 2: JohnMitchell, David  Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

This was a case of the game of two halves, after seven ends AWRE were leading thirteen shots to two, at the break there were only two shots between the sides but AWRE only won three of the final eleven ends and lost the rink by 17 - 25. AWRE scoring only four shots in the time Marnell Jades scored twenty three, including four counts of four shots.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE were always in control of this match and lead eighteen shots to seven at tea. The final eights were fairly even but  AWRE ended with a comfortable win by 24 - 13.

Match Result: AWRE 62 (5 Points) Marnell Jades 52 (2 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season we also took 5 points.

July 11th Home to Howard Park Whites.

A very hot  and humid afternoon with bright sunshine. The green was beginning to show signs of the long dry period with brown patches beginning to appear and in need of a good cut.

The League Secretary is currently on holiday so an up to date had not been issued but this match was between the top two sides in the table at the moment.

Rink 1: Dot Brown, Ian Bowman and John Maycock.

After the first three ends, AWRE were leading five shots to one but then only scored on one of the next seven ends and at the break were losing seven shots to sixteen. AWRE won five of the remaining eight ends, and going into the last end there was only a single shot difference between the teams. Howard Park won the last end and consequently took the rink points by winning 17 - 19.

Rink 2: John Mutlow, Graham Johnston and Elaine Bowman.

This turned out to be a very one-sided match with AWRE winning fourteen of the eighteen ends played. At the break the score was seventeen shots to four which stretched to 26 - 9 on completion of the game.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

Another game dominated by AWRE with some high scoring ends. At the break AWRE held an eighteen shot lead This increased to twenty five shots at the end of the game with AWRE gaining a very comfortable victory by 36 - 11.

Match Result: AWRE 79 (5 Points) Howard Park Whites 39 (2 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season we were beaten and only took 2 points.

July 18th Home to Oakley B.

A pleasant warm afternoon, not as hot as the last few weeks. The green was very dry with large brown areas and very much in need of a good rain or watering

As last week the League Secretary is still on holiday so an up to date had not been issued .

Rink 1: Dot Brown, Ian Bowman and Fred Brown .

AWRE won the first end, but then dropped a five on the second end, and went eight shots to two down after four ends, but at tea the scores were level at nine all. Another five to Oakley on end thirteen again opened a five shot lead, which was recovered by end fifteen, at that point the teams were level at fifteen all. In a close finish over the final three ends Oakley ended up as winners  by 16 - 18.

Rink 2: David Bowman, Ian Lightbody and Elaine Bowman.

After six ends Oakley were leading by seven shots to two, but two fours and a single meant at tea  AWRE were in front by eleven shots to nine.. After the break AWRE won the first eight ends without reply and Oakley only scored a single on end eighteen, which ensured a conclusive victory by 27 - 10

Rink 3: Diana Garrard, Graham Johnston and John Maycock.

AWRE opened the match with a three, but at the break were losing by eight shots to eleven. The turning point in this game were ends twelve and thirteen where AWRE scored a five and a seven to open a seven shot lead. Despite dropping a five on end fifteen, AWRE ran out  winners by 24 - 19.

Match Result: AWRE 67 (5 Points) Oakley B 47 (2 Points). In the corresponding fixture last season we won but only took 3 points.

July 25th Away to Fleet United Swans.

It was decided by the League Secretary, after asking Team Captains for their opinions, that the complete League programme for this week was cancelled due to the extreme hot conditions that were expected this afternoon.

All teams were awarded 3.5 points for the un-played matches. This means AWRE now has 54.5 points, a single point ahead of Basingstoke Town on 53.5, but Basingstoke have played one less match. Our last match of the season against Basingstoke clearly could decide the championship. Howard Park are third on 49.5 points.

Match Result: Fleet United Swans (3.5 Points) AWRE (3.5 Points)

August 1st Home to Hook Diamonds.

A pleasant warm afternoon, with the green in fair condition after the recent rain.

All teams received 3.5 points from last weeks cancelled matches, meaning AWRE were still league leaders with 54. 5 points, one ahead of Basingstoke Town, however they have played one less match. .

Rink 1: Dot Brown, Ian Bowman and Graham Johnston.

AWRE started this game with a five shot advantage as Hook fielded an all male rink. By the break for tea, this lead had increased to thirty three shots with AWRE winning all ten ends. Throughout the match Hook only won three ends and the final score was 43 - 6 to AWRE.

Rink 2: John Mutlow, David Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

Another comfortable win for AWRE with Hook only winning four ends during the match. At the break AWRE were leading fifteen shots to seven, and by winning the next eight ends AWRE were leading by twenty three shots going into the last end won by Hook. The final score was 30- 9, those of you that read these reports will know it is not my policy to mention personal performances but at the request of the other team members, I must mention a great achievement by John, playing at lead who had a 50% "toucher rate" during the match.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

The first half of this match was very even and relatively low scoring, with only fifteen shots scored after ten ends. At the break Hook were leading by nine shots to six. AWRE never really got into the second part of the match and only scored three shots on two winning ends. Hook scored ten in the same period and ended up comfortable winners by ten shots. The rink result being 9 - 19.

August 6th Away to Hook Diamonds.

This re-arranged match was cancelled by Hook Diamonds as they were unable to raise a team.

Under the rules of the Stan Hardman League AWRE were awarded the points average of their away matches.

Match Result: AWRE awarded 5 Points.  In the corresponding fixture last season we also took 5 points.

August 8th Home to Basingstoke Town.

AWRE went into this re-arranged and final match as league leaders. Our points total prior to the match was 64.5 compared with 58.5 scored by Basingstoke but Town still have two matches to play. At the request of the visitors it was agreed to play this match without the break after ten ends for tea, as they had several players playing in another away match at St Marybourne.

Rink 1: Dot Brown, Ian Bowman and Graham Johnston.

This was a very even match and after fourteen ends the score was ten shots each. A two on end fifteen resulted in AWRE taking the lead for the first time in the match, and a triple on end sixteen opened a five shot advantage, the final two ends were shared meaning a win for AWRE by 16 - 11.

Rink 2: David Bowman, John Maycock and Elaine Bowman.

After five ends Basingstoke were leading nine shots to three, but fives on ends six and eight proved decisive. After end eight Basingstoke only won three of the remaining ten ends with singles, while AWRE moved on to twenty four. The final score was 24 - 12.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Lightbody and Graham Tompkins.

Both teams won nine ends during the match, but three triples and a four from Basingstoke proved the difference between the teams. After winning the opening end AWRE were behind for all the game..The result being 14 - 20.

Match Result: AWRE 54 (5 Points) Basingstoke Town 43 (2 Points). The corresponding fixture last season was conceded by Basingstoke.

Season 2019 Summary and League Statistics.

2019 was a very good season for the Club and with qualification to the Play-Offs achieved. At the time of writing I can not say if we won the League because Basingstoke have two games, to either play or share the points. We finished our season with 69.5 points, eight more than Basingstoke  so it will be interesting to see how Basingstoke can pull these back to finish as League Winners.

We actually played twelve matches winning eleven of them, the only defeat was by only two shots at Oakley. Hook Diamonds were unable to play our match at Hook, as they were unable to raise a team, and we were awarded 5 points. The other game not played was away at Fleet, due to the heatwave temperatures that afternoon, the whole league programme was suspended and all teams received 3.5 points.

Thanks to you all that played in any matches during the season, and hopefully see you all again in 2020.
