Play-Off Reports

August 15th against Hook Sapphire at Farnborough. (Quarter Final)

A lovely warm and sunny afternoon with the green in perfect condition, with most of our squad playing at the venue for the first time.

Rink 1: Ian Bowman, Dot Brown and Graham Johnston.

Dropping eight shots on the opening two ends meant AWRE were always playing catch-up, and at the break for tea AWRE were trailing by eighteen shots to seven. After the break AWRE went another five ends without scoring and despite winning the final three ends ended well beaten 10 - 27.

Rink 2: Diane Tompkins, Dave James and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE started this game very well and after five ends were leading by ten shots to one. At the break the lead was still ten shots but after dropping three counts of four in the final eight ends meant the final score was 25 - 21.

Rink 3: David Bowman, John Maycock and Elaine Bowman.

This was a close match which at any stage the teams were never more than three shots apart. At the break Hook held a three shot lead of eight shots to eleven. AWRE finished the match very strongly and won six of the remaining eight ends, meaning victory by six shots 19 - 13.

Match Result: AWRE B 54 (4 Points) Hook Sapphires 61 (3 Points).

August 22nd against Cove at Hook. (Semi-Final)

Rink 1: John Mitchell , Dot Brown and Graham Johnston.

AWRE opened the game strongly and after four bends were leading eight shots to two. At the break the lead was four shots.thirteen to nine. AWRE won six of the remaining eight ends to win by 21-15.

Rink 2: Diane Tompkins, Ian Bowman and Graham Tompkins.

This turned out to be very close with AWRE just edging it after winning ten of the eighteen ends. A slow start meant a four shot lead to Cove after two ends, but at tea AWRE led twelve against nine. A five by Cove on end twelve gave them the lead by a single shot which increased to three on the next end. AWRE however won four of the remaining five ends to win by 18 -17.

Rink 3: John Mutlow, David Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

A very well matched game which after ten ends at the break AWRE were leading seven shots to six. A four scored on end twelve proved decisive in the match but even so at fourteen ends Cove had fought back to level at eleven shots each. AWRE won three of the final four ends to win the match 15 -12.

Match Result: AWRE B 54 (7 Points) Cove 44 (0 Points).

August 29th against Whitchurch at Old Basing. (Final)

The Final was scheduled to be played at Cove, but following requests from both teams, because of the travelling involved, it was re-arranged to be played at Old Basing. However it did back-fire as the green did not play well which did not make for a good final. On saying that the green was the same for both teams and Whitchurch adapted to the conditions better than AWRE.

Rink 1: John Mutlow, Dot Brown and Graham Johnston.

AWRE went four nil down in the first three ends, and only scored four singles up until the break, at which point they were trailing by nine shots to four. AWRE scored a triple on the first end after the break to get within two shots, but then went five ends without scoring and with only two ends to play were losing by ten shots. Five shots on the final to ends reduced the gap, but Whitchurch won the triple by 17 -11.

Rink 2: Ian Lightbody, David Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

This was the best match of the afternoon and remained very even throughout the eighteen ends At the break AWRE were leading nine shots to seven, but ten shots in four ends meant after fifteen ends Whitchurch were leading seventeen shots to twelve. A four scored on end sixteen, followed by a three on the seventeeth .

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, John Maycock, and Graham Tompkins.

AWRE B were always leading this game up until end eleven, where they scored three shots, after which the score was eleven to AWRE against six by Whitchurch. This end turned out to be the last won by AWRE B, and they conceded sixteen shots during the losing run. The final score was 11 - 22.

Match Result: AWRE 41 (2 Points) Whitchurch 52 (5 Points).
