Season 2017 Match Reports

Season 2017 Match Reports

Reports

This was the first season where AWRE entered only one team in the league due to a lack of numbers of members wishing to play and we felt the best way forward was to drop the team that had previously played in the Western Division.

May 4th Away to Basingstoke Town.

Rink 1: Ian Watts, Dot Brown and John Welch.

The game started fairly evenly but at the tea break, Town had a eight shot lead of eight to sixteen, and were never put under any pressure. The final score was 14 to 20, AWRE only managed to win six ends which included a four and two threes.

Rink 2: Diane Tompkins, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

It took the AWRE triple a few ends to get to grips with the conditions and after seven ends they were losing by 3 shots to 9. However from end eight AWRE won ten of the final eleven ends to win the rink by 17 shots to 10.

Rink 3: John Mitchell, Ian Lightbody and Elaine Bowman.

Another rink where the away triple struggled to get into the match, the score after ten ends was two shots to ten. During the second half, AWRE improved and won five of the eight ends, but the final score was 7 shots to 17.

Match Result: AWRE 38 (2 Points) Basingstoke Town 47 (5 Points).

May 11th Home to Thornycroft

Rink 1: Brenda Watson, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

AWRE started the match by dropping four shots on the first end but at the break they had opened up a commanding lead of twenty two shots to six. The final eight ends were fairly even and the final score was 28 shots to 14.

Rink 2: Ian Watts, Dot Brown and John Welch.

This rink only won three of the first ten ends and were trailing by ten shots at the break. The second half was much closer with AWRE winning five ends, but the damage was already done and ended up losing the rink by 11 shots to 16.

Rink 3: Tom Dearman, Ian Lightbody and Elaine Bowman.

A strong start meant a lead of thirteen shots to seven after the ten ends before the break. The saying, "it all changes after tea" certainly came true and AWRE went seven ends without scoring and with only two ends to play Thornycroft had taken a single shot lead. This appeared to focus the AWRE triple who responded by taking twos on the final two  ends to win the rink 17 shots to 14.

Match Result: AWRE 56 (5 Points) Thornycroft 44 (2 Points).

May 18th Home to Marnell Jades.

Rink 1: Tom Dearman, Dot Brown and John Welch.

A very convincing performance from this triple after starting with a five shot advantage, because Marnell had an all male rink. Marnell only won five ends during the match, scoring a single shot on each of these ends,  AWRE won the match 27 shots to 5.,

Rink 2: Diane Tompkins, John Mutlow and John Maycock.

A very even match until the break at which point Marnell held a single shot lead of eleven shots to twelve. The final eight ends were much more one-sided with AWRE winning seven ends scoring fourteen shots and winning the match 25 - 14.

Rink 3: Brenda Watson, Elaine Bowman and David Bowman.

This turned out to be the closest match of the afternoon and after fifteen ends the scores were level at 15 shots each. AWRE however won the final three ends, scoring seven shots to ensure victory by 22 - 15.

Match Result: AWRE 74 (7 Points) Marnell Jades 34 (0 Points).

May 25th Away to Howard Park White.

Rink 1: Diane Tompkins, Ian Watts and John Maycock.

AWRE started this triple with a five shot advantage because Howard Park fielded an all male rink. The five shot start helped make the score very even throughout with Howard Park eventually winning by 23 - 24. The interesting point about this game was AWRE did not lose a end by only a single shot, dropping seven twos, two threes and a four in the ten ends lost. They did however pick up a six on end thirteen.

Rink 2: Fred Gill, Dot Brown and John Welch.

AWRE only won six ends including two threes in this game and went six ends without scoring. Howard Park won the triple by 11 - 17.

Rink 3: Brenda Watson, Ian Bowman and Elaine Bowman.

A very close match throughout with both teams winning nine ends. At the break Howard Park held a four shot advantage leading six shots to ten. A very strong finish by AWRE scoring fourteen shots in the final eight ends, including a five, resulted in a 19 - 16 win for AWRE.

Match Result: AWRE 53 (2 Points) Howard Park White 57 (5 Points).

June 1st Away to Oakley B

Rink 1: Ian Watts, Dot Brown and John Maycock.

AWRE started this game by dropping a four and that really set up the tone of the match as only seven of the eighteen ends played were won by a single shot. At the break there was a five shot advantage to the home side which had doubled by the end of the match with AWRE only winning two of the final ten ends.  The final score was 14 - 24.

Rink 2: John Mitchell, John Mutlow and Elaine Bowman.

A very strong performance throughout the game allowing Oakley to only win seven ends, six of which were decided by only a single shot. At tea AWRE were ahead eleven shots to four which had increased to 27 - 8 after the eighteen ends.

Rink 3: Sue Brown, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

This match turned out to be the closest of the afternoon, throughout there was never much between the two teams. After thirteen ends AWRE held a lead of fourteen shots to nine, but the dropped six shots by losing three successive ends, meaning Oakley had a single shot lead with two ends to play. AWRE won these ends to win 17-15.

Match Result: AWRE 58 (5 Points) Oakley B 47 (2 Points).

June 8th Home to Fleet United Swans.

Prior to this match the league table, after five matches showed AWRE in second place on 21 points. Howard Park Whites were the leaders on 24 points. Today's opponents were third also on 21 points but had only played four matches. A good points return today would be very helpful to consolidate second place.

Rink 1: Diane Tompkins, John Mitchell, and John Maycock.

I have misplaced the result card for this game, but AWRE won by 17 - 10

Rink 2: Tom Dearman, John Welch, and Elaine Bowman.

A close and well fought match throughout with both teams winning nine ends. At the break AWRE were leading nine shots to seven and with only the last end to play held a four shot advantage. However Fleet did not give up and secured a six on this final end to win the match by 17 - 19.

Rink 3: Rosa Shephard, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

Just like the game on rink two this match had a sting in its tail. The home triple were solid throughout and Fleet failed to score a single shot in the first eight ends. At tea the score was fifteen shots to two, and with only two ends to play the lead was nineteen shots to seven. The last two ends were won by Fleet who scored nine shots, more than twice their score on the previous sixteen ends. The final score was 19 - 16.

Match Result: AWRE 53 (5 points) Fleet United Swans 45 (2 points).

June 15th Away to Hook DIamonds.

RInk 1: Diane Tompkins, John Mutlow and John Maycock.

A slow start from the AWRE triple who went four ends without scoring however at the break AWRE had got into the match and were losing by five shots to eight at the break. The tea and biscuits inspired AWRE and they won the eleventh end with a four to take the lead. This lead was maintained for the remaining ends, despite dropping four shots on the final end to win 16 - 14.

RInk 2: Fred Gill, John Mitchell and Elaine Bowman.

This triple never got into this match and only won five ends throughout the afternoon. The final score was 7 - 20.

RInk 3: Brenda Watson, Dot Brown and David Bowman.

Hook were penalised five shots for not fielding a mixed triple but after only two ends were leading by a single shot. AWRE only won two of the first ten ends and at the break were losing by eight shots to twenty. AWRE doubled their tea time score in the second period but the damage had already been done and ended up losing the match 16 - 25.

Match Result: Hook DIamonds 59 (5 Points) AWRE 39 (2 Points).

June 22nd Home to Basingstoke Town.

Rink 1: Rosa Shephard, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

AWRE started well by winning the first three ends but then Basingstoke got into the match and at the break they were winning by a single shot. After fourteen ends their lead had increased to six shots but going into the final end AWRE had pulled things back and were leading fifteen shots to fourteen. A single shot on the final end to the Town resulted in a 15 - 15 draw.

Rink 2: Ian Watts, Dot Brown and John Maycock.

I have misplaced the result card for this rink but in a low scoring match AWRE secured a 14 - 9 victory.

Rink 3: Tom Dearman, John Welch and Elaine Bowman.

AWRE won the first end with a double then found themselves trailing by six shots after five ends. At tea Town were leading by three shots but then failed to score for seven of the final eight ends, with only a two on end sixteen. AWRE however clearly enjoyed the biscuits and scored thirteen shots after tea to win the match 21 - 11.

Match Result: AWRE 50 (6 Points) Basingstoke Town 35 (1 Point)

June 29th Away to Thornycroft.

Rink 1: Brenda Watson, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

AWRE dropped four shots on the first end but then won fourteen of the remaining seventeen ends. At tea AWRE held a ten shot lead, which by the end of the match had increased to nineteen, to win 30 - 11.

Rink 2: Fred Gill, Dot Brown and John Welch.

The first  half of this match was very even and after nine ends to scores were level at seven shots each. The second period was much more one-sided and Thornycroft only won one end with a single shot, meanwhile AWRE scored twenty to win the rink 27 - 7.

Rink 3: John Mitchell, John Mutlow and Elaine Bowman.

AWRE held a ten shot lead after the first end due to scoring a five and having a five shot bonus because Thornycroft  had a all male triple. Before the break Thornycroft scored a five on the third end but then dropped a six and a four on ends five and six. The teatime score was twenty seven to AWRE with only six to the home team. Both sides won four ends after the break to make the result 32 - 11

Match Result: AWRE 89 (7 Points) Thornycroft 30 (0 Points)

July 6th Away to Marnell Jades.

Rink 1: Tom Dearman, Dot Brown and John Maycock.

Both teams won nine ends, however Marnell were restricted to eight singles and a two in their nine ends. The ends won by AWRE, were by much bigger margins, with two ends of five and three ends of three. This meant that the winning margin of an evenly matched game was 25 - 10 to AWRE.

Rink 2: John Mitchell Ian Watts and Elaine Bowman.

An even first ten ends meant at the break AWRE held a lead of eight shots to seven, Both teams won four ends after tea but AWRE only scored six, Marnell however with two fours, a three and a two secured thirteen shots. The match result was 14 - 20 to Marnell.

Rink 3: Brenda Watson, Elaine Bowman and David Bowman.

The AWRE triple only won three ends before the break, at which the score was five shot to ten. The remaining eights ends were shared with both teams scoring six shots, meaning victory for Marnell by 11 - 16.

Match Result: AWRE 50 (3 Points) Marnell Jades 46 (4 Points).

July 13th Home to Howard Park White.

Rink 1: Fred Gill, Dot Brown and John Maycock.

AWRE started this match with a five shot advantage due to Howard Park having an all male rink. At the break AWRE were leading by fourteen shots to seven which had increased to 20 - 12 at eighteen ends.

Rink 2: Ian Watts, John Welch and Elaine Bowman.

The carded score for this rink was 19 - 18  but adjustments were required for two reasons. Firstly Howard Park only had two players which were both male, therefore AWRE had a five shot start. Also Howard Park lost 25% of their total (pair v triple), therefore their eighteen became thirteen, meaning the adjusted score was AWRE 24 Howard Park 13.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

AWRE started this match strongly and after seven ends were leading ten shots to three, which at tea had become eleven shots to six. Howard Park had the better of the remaining ends to force a drawn rink of 15 - 15, The League Secretary on checking the result card discovered that  Howard Park played an ineligible player on this rink, therefore the point gained by Howard Park was awarded to AWRE.

Revised Match Result: AWRE 59 (7 Points) Marnell Jades 40 (0 Points).

July 20th Home to Oakley B

Rink 1: John Mutlow, Dot Brown and John Maycock.

At the break this triple appeared to up against it and were trailing by six shots. Oakley also won the eleventh end but that turned out to be last end they did. AWRE scored eighteen shots, including a seven on the final seven ends to win 23 - 12.

Rink 2: Tom Dearman, John Welch and Elaine Bowman.

A very close match throughout and in a low scoring match AWRE gained three ends of three shots and Oakley secured a five on end six. At the break AWRE held a two shot lead of eleven to nine. The remaining ends were close with Oakley winning five of them, but by only scoring one shot of their winning ends meant AWRE held on the win the Rink 15 - 14.

Rink 3: Diane Tompkins, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

AWRE dropped five shots on the first end which in a very tight match proved decisive in the final total. At tea Oakley held a single shot lead and after sixteen ends the match was level at sixteen shots each. Oakley won the penultimate end by a single shot but AWRE replied with a single on the final end,to draw the Rink 17 - 17.

Match Result: AWRE 55 (6 Points) Oakley B 43 (1 Point).

July 27th Away to Fleet United Swans

Prior to this match the table showed AWRE top of the table league on fifty seven points with two remaining fixtures, Howard Park White were second on fifty four points also from twelve matches. Basingstoke Town were third on fifty one points but had two matches in hand. Today's opponents were also in contention for the play-offs on forty eight points with one match in hand.

Rink 1: Rosa Shephard, John Welch and David Bowman.

A very close match throughout with Fleet Swans winning ten ends. At the break AWRE were trailing by a single shot  and by losing the next two ends allowed Fleet to open up a four shot lead after twelve ends. A strong finish in taking eight shots meant that with only the final end to play the scores were level. A single on end eighteen ensured a 18 - 17 victory.

Rink 2: John Mitchell, Dot Brown and John Maycock.

Another close match with AWRE opening a lead at tea, but in winning three ends of the ten scored eleven shots, meanwhile Fleet only scored eight from their seven winning ends. The second half was very even with AWRE winning the points by 18 - 16.

Rink 3: Fred Gill, Ian Lightbody and Elaine Bowman.

AWRE only dropped two of the first ten ends, with two threes meaning at the break held a lead of twelve shots to six. Fleet had the better of the final eight ends but never managed to take the lead and AWRE won the rink by 16 - 12.

Match Result: AWRE 52 (7 Points) Fleet United Swans 45 (0 Points)

August 3rd Home to Hook DIamonds.

Rink 1: Elaine Bowman, Ian Bowman and David Bowman.

AWRE were always in control of this game and ended comfortable winners by 22 - 8

Rink 2: Dot. Brown, John Welch and John Maycock.

AWRE started this match with a five shot advantage, due to the all male triple fielded by Hook. At the break AWRE held the lead, seventeen shots to six. In the second period AWRE only scored four shots compared with eight from Hook but ended it as winners by 21 - 14.

Rink 3; Hook could not raise a team.

Match Result: AWRE 43 (7 Points) Hook Diamonds 22 (0 Points)
